Brem Foundation Projects

100% of your donation supports Brem Foundation Projects.

Biopsy and Diagnostic Fund: Brem Foundation provides biopsies and other diagnostic services for uninsured and underinsured women in the Washington, DC metropolitan area including: Northern VA, Montgomery and Prince Georges Counties in MD who do not qualify for other programs. Many places in our area provide help for uninsured women once they have been diagnosed with breast cancer, but little help is available to the uninsured woman without a diagnosis. The Biopsy and Diagnostic Fund helps women in need get early, accurate lifesaving information about whether they have breast cancer.

Yearly projected costs for 2010 - $100,000. The average cost per woman for diagnostic service, e.g. sonogram/biopsy, is $1,000.

Research: Brem Foundation’s support of diagnostic research utilizing Breast Specific Gamma Imaging (BSGI) in 2008 and 2009 is already saving lives worldwide. The findings have greatly increased the use of BSGI internationally. Dr. Brem is currently conducting an Automated Breast Ultrasound (ABUS) study which investigates the effectiveness of automated breast sonogram in conjunction with digital screening mammography for women with dense breasts. Dense breasts elevate the risk of breast cancer and are more difficult to diagnosis with mammography alone. It is crucial to find an early and more accurate diagnosis for women in this category.

Yearly cost $40,000.

Fellowship Program: New in 2011. A fellowship program will train dedicated breast radiologists, with focus on Dr. Brem’s protocols for early detection, rapid access to diagnosis, safeguarding the physical and emotional health of the patient through the process, and community outreach to the underserved. The goal will be to raise the standard of care throughout the nation by sending radiologists trained to provide the highest standards in breast care everywhere.

Cost from January 2011- July 2013: One half-year and two one-year fellowships - $200,000.

Education: Brem Foundation maintains a website, publishes a newsletter, and presents informational programs throughout the Washington metropolitan area.

All costs for the web site, printed materials and speaking programs are volunteered or paid for by targeted donations. No public donations are used for these costs.
